OnePlus 5 Rumor: Upcoming Flagship Killer Might Have A Lite Model [UPDATED]
The official reveal of the OnePlus 5 is approaching and a new interesting rumor is circulating about this year’s “flagship killer.” New benchmark scores may have revealed that the OnePlus 5 might arrive with different variants including a Lite model.
A smartphone with the model number OnePlus A5000 was spotted on the benchmarking site GeekBench, and it’s listed as having a Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM. Also, it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, according to GizBot. It can be noted that last year’s OnePlus 3 arrived with the same processor, while the 3T model launched with the faster SP 821. However, both came with the same 6GB RAM.
It is very unlikely that the OnePlus A5000 is the OnePlus 5. The Chinese phone maker itself and chip maker Qualcomm have both confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will arrive with the Snapdragon 835 processor. Moreover, it wouldn’t make sense for OnePlus to cut down the RAM capacity of its new flagship.
This is why it’s being speculated that the OnePlus A5000 device that’s listed on GeekBench might be the Lite model of the OnePlus 5. A Lite lower-spec’d version of the OP5 is a huge possibility considering that the 2017 flagship killer is believed to cost a lot more than its predecessors. The OnePlus 5 Lite could be a way to get more people onboard the OnePlus brand.
This won’t also be the first time that OnePlus has offered a low- or mid-ranger. Back in 2015, the company released the OnePlus X, which only costs $249 unlocked. This gave fans a more affordable option than the OnePlus 2, which started at $329 at the time.
The OnePlus 5 is rumored to cost somewhere between $450 and $500. It was also previously reported that the upcoming handset might even cost as much as $650. The price hike is due to the handset’s more costly components.
If the OnePlus 5 is indeed going to be priced that expensive, it would seem like a good idea for the company to offer an affordable option. The company hasn’t confirmed anything yet however, so it’s best not to get our hopes up.
OnePlus 5 Wallpapers Revealed
The OnePlus launcher was given a software update recently and it included new wallpapers for the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. The company usually only releases new wallpapers when it’s about to launch its new flagship, or when it releases a new color option for an existing product.
The new wallpapers are actually hidden within the OnePlus launcher. To make it easier for many, Android Authority has set up a Google Drive folder so users can just download it quickly. The new wallpapers appear to be a departure from the full-frame painted wallpapers from its predecessors, while still maintaining the overall style.
Still A 1080p Full HD Display?
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau recently shared a screenshot of the updated Hydrogen OS on the OnePlus 5. It showed that the phone comes with Microsoft apps pre-installed on the phone.
The most interesting thing about this teaser is that the screenshot carries a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, as spotted by GizmoChina. This means that the OnePlus 5 will have a 1080p Full HD display, which is contradictory to recent rumors claiming that it will come with a 2K display.
June 15 or June 20 Release Date? [UPDATED]
[UPDATE]: OnePlus has officially announced that it will be launching the OnePlus 5 on June 20 at 12 p.m. EDT. The launch will be streamed live on YouTube and on the OnePlus 5 Launch wbesite.
It was previously rumored that the OnePlus 5 was going to launch on June 15. The rumor was sparked when a poster for DxO’s upcoming event hinted at the handset’s appearance on the same date.
However, a user on the Chinese social media site Weibo has shared a OnePlus poster showing a June 20 launch date. The company hasn’t announced anything yet, but it seems like the OnePlus 5 will surely be announced this month.
