OnePlus Dismisses Price Rumor, Will Clock Snapdragon 810 Lower For The OnePlus 2
Even before OnePlus’s announcement that its new smartphone the OnePlus 2 will use the Snapdragon 810 chipset, rumors abounded about the price of the second “flagship killer,” as the Chinese smartphone maker marketed its first phone, the OnePlus One.
Certainly, with the OnePlus One offering many high-end specs at a price well below those of many other premium phones, its vendor joined larger rival Xiaomi Corp. in setting a higher bar on what consumers could expect at any given price point. The OnePlus 2, therefore, is eagerly anticipated and widely expected to be released next month.
OnePlus went on record Thursday to say that the phone will definitely cost more than the $322 (about 20,600 rupees) -- a figure that has been making the rounds, but added another detail about the workings of the OnePlus 2.
To deal with potential overheating, which has been repeatedly reported on other phones running on the Snapdragon 810 chipset, the processor will be set to work at a lower speed, the company said on its official forums.
“The 810 is a top-of-the-line processor, and it’s what the OnePlus 2 deserves. Our Snapdragon 810 chipset runs the same eight cores for stability, but at 1.8 GHz for cooler temperatures,” the company said.
“After our recent announcement about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 being the CPU of the OnePlus 2, we have seen a surge of speculations and rumors surface about the price of the 2 and overheating concerns. We would like to remind you that these are just that - rumors,” the company added.
The 810 is much more powerful than its younger counterpart, the 801, which was used for the OnePlus One, and is a much more expensive component, the company said.
“We’re paying more for the 810 than we ever have for the 801. In fact, the cost is almost 60 percent higher, and we’re not getting any discount. We can tell you now that the price of the 2 will certainly be higher than $322.”
Leading up to the launch of the new phone, OnePlus has slashed the price of the current model. For instance, the 64GB version of the OnePlus One is now available at $299 (about 19,000 rupees), a $50 discount on its earlier price.
