The second mainline story DLC for Obsidian Entertainment’s critically acclaimed “The Outer Worlds” is set to release next week, and the devs have recently revealed the new story’s opening segment.
The “Murder on Eridanos” DLC will have players investigating the death of renowned actress Halcyon Helen in a luxury resort. This is the second DLC next to last year’s “Peril on Gorgon,” and this one will be the final piece of content for the game, according to a dev post on the PS Blog.
“The Outer Worlds” is a sci-fi roleplaying game from the team behind “Fallout: New Vegas” and the “Pillars of Eternity” series. Players take on the role of The Stranger, a would-be colonist who got stranded on the edge of space. After being awoken by rogue scientist and wanted criminal Phineas Welles, players are then dragged into a galactic odyssey to confront the vast mega-corporations that rule the outer worlds.
The game features anachronistic themes, mixing together high-tech sci-fi elements like robotics and space travel with the pop culture of 1950s America, similar to how the “Fallout” series handles its aesthetics. The “Murder on Eridanos” DLC features a detective noir-esque presentation with the murder investigation theme.
“The Outer Worlds” game director Megan Starks says they will “put our own unique spin on a murder mystery.” The DLC will have players primarily investigate the murder of Halcyon Helen, but there are more mysteries to be uncovered.
“[Players] will have to interrogate witnesses, learn about possible alibis and argue who you believe is right,” she adds.
This implies that the DLC will have endings based on player choices much like the base game. Players may end up implicating an innocent witness and let the actual killer walk away depending on how they handle certain situations in the game.
The DLC will add the new Discrepancy Amplifier to help players find the truth. This tool can be used to reveal hidden details in the environment that will unlock different quest options. Additionally, players will be able to find more weapons, armor, perks and flaws as they explore the large luxury resort owned by the Rizzo Corporation on Eridanos.
“Murder on Eridanos” will release on March 17 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
