‘Outlander’ Season 3 Spoilers: Frank Will Appear More In The TV Show Than The Book
“Voyager” readers know some of what to expect in “Outlander” Season 3, but they don’t know everything. The Starz drama takes liberties with certain storylines, and author Diana Gabaldon often approves the changes. She revealed that she was pleased to see how the TV show incorporated Frank’s character.
Fans of the books know that Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Frank’s (Tobias Menzies) marriage doesn’t take up a huge amount of time in “Voyager,” the novel Season 3 is based on. Readers get a brief glimpse into their lives, but it seems the TV show will give more than that.
“They’ve expanded that end of the story a little bit, but they’ve done it well, very consistently,” Gabaldon told TV Guide.
It seems like Balfe is happy to have an extra leading man. Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire are separated in the beginning of “Outlander” Season 3, so Heughan and Balfe aren’t working together. “It’s very strange, but the nice thing is I have been able to work with Tobias,” Balfe told Vanity Fair. “I feel quite lucky. If I don’t have one husband, I’ve always got the backup. Not that either of them are backups, but it’s been an interesting and strange dynamic.”
Unlike his onscreen wife, Menzies does get to work with Heughan. Audiences will also see him portray Black Jack Randall again, and he’ll meet Jamie on the battlefield in Season 3. Book readers can expect that part, as well as much of Jamie’s storyline, to stay the same. “Most of Jamie’s stuff, which is a lot of the first part, is done very straight from the book,” Gabaldon added. “It’s very recognizable, you might say.”
Not everything will be in the order fans expect, though. As previously reported, the opening scene of the premiere will be different. Though the book starts with Jamie not being able to recall the Battle of Culloden, the TV show will kick off with Jamie and Black Jack’s showdown.
“Outlander” Season 3 will premiere in the spring on Starz.
