‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Cheers On Caitriona Balfe During Golden Globes
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe play a married couple in “Outlander,” and it seems like they’re just as supportive of each other in real life. While only Balfe attended the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, Heughan used Twitter to show that he was cheering her on.
As soon as red carpet photos surfaced online, the Scottish actor tweeted his praise for his leading lady. She wore a navy and orange dress designed by Delpozo.
Balfe was nominated in the best actress in a drama series category. She was up against Evan Rachel Wood from “Westworld,” Keri Russell from “The Americans,” Winona Ryder from “Stranger Things” and Claire Foy from “The Crown.” Ultimately, Foy won for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II.
After Balfe’s loss, Heughan retweeted a message of support from Lynette Rice, Entertainment Weekly’s TV Editor at Large. She noted that there was “crazy competition” in the category, and Balfe will win something soon.

At the end of the night, Heughan agreed with Balfe’s admiration for Meryl Streep, who was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes. He also wished Balfe a safe flight back to Scotland.
The two won’t be in the U.K. for long. Though “Outlander” Season 3 will partially take place in Scotland, the story will take Jamie (Heughan) and Claire (Balfe) to Jamaica eventually. The actors will film in South Africa, which will stand in for the Carribean.
They need to reunite before they head off to exotic locales, though. The couple spent 20 years separated after Claire was sent back to her own time. After discovering Jamie survived the Battle of Culloden, Claire is determined to go back to the 18th century. However, their relationship will be a little different.
“It’s also very fraught,” Balfe told Elle, “because I think anyone who’s spent any time apart from someone that they love, even if it’s just a long-distance relationship, once you see each other again, you have all the expectations, and you have all of the things that you think you’ll say, and the way you think it’ll go. Life’s never like that. I love that it’s kind of complicated.”
“Outlander” Season 3 does not yet have a return date.
