  • "Outriders" creative director Bartek Kmita discusses the demo's reception and gameplay ideology
  • The demo has reached the 2 million download mark
  • The devs will focus on creating engaging loot loops to keep the game fun to play

The demo for the upcoming looter shooter RPG “Outriders” has been quite successful, with players having spent way more hours on it than most others would for a game sampler.

The “Outriders” demo was released in late February and gave players a taste of the game’s combat and RPG systems by making the entire opening act playable. All four of the character classes were playable and a few short side missions were also made available.

The community gave the demo both worthy praise and meaningful criticism, and the developers have responded in kind.

Square Enix’s senior community manager Toby Palm spoke with Bartek Kmita, the creative director of “Outriders” on the PS Blog, where they discussed the developers’ reaction to the community reception of the game so far.

Kmita said that they are aiming to create a game with “almost endless possibilities.” This is a reaction to how some players have spent 20 to 100 hours just playing the “Outriders” demo.

Normally, completing the demo with just one playable character class would take roughly three hours, with the subsequent playthroughs being much shorter since the intro sequence can be skipped after finishing it for the first time.

“Looking now at how people are playing the demo, and how they experiment with all the loot they found gives us a lot of satisfaction,” Kmita said.

Palm also brought up the topic of loot, specifically the legendary weapons and armor pieces that players are able to acquire in the game, referring to a recent change that People Can Fly made to nerf the legendary weapon farming route in the demo.

Kmita explained that the dev team has had a long discussion regarding the drop rates and loot sources for legendary items. He added that they are committed to making the game’s core loot-loop as engaging and enjoyable as possible so as not to take away the fun from actually playing “Outriders.”

The demo version of “Outriders” has had over 2 million downloads since it was released. The full version of the game will be available on April 1 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Google Stadia.
