Pakistani Bride Kills 15 In Attempt To Poison Husband
A Pakistani woman killed a total of 15 people, while 8 remain hospitalized, in an attempt to poison her husband Thursday, according to a Tuesday BBC report.
Asiya Bibi was not allowed to choose who she married, so she obtained a poisonous substance from her boyfriend to escape the marriage her parents reportedly forced her into.
Bibi mixed the substance in her husband's milk, however, he did not drink it at first. The poisoned milk was turned into a yogurt-based drink called lassi and was served to extended members of the family.
Twenty-three people were affected by the poison, including the husband, who was among the 15 who perished.
Pakistani police confirmed Bibi was arrested and charged with murder, and both her boyfriend and his aunt were arrested as well for links to the incident. It is not clear what kind of substance was used to poison the family, but further testing is underway.
Bibi appeared in court and denied all charges according to a Sky News report Tuesday.
Incidents like this are rare, however, do not only occur in remote areas of the globe. In August, a Utah-based woman poisoned her husband through an eye drop solution.
Luckily, the substance did not kill the husband but left him with various symptoms. Chandra Vayu Stevens Read's husband, Dallen Tubbs, experienced nausea, and blurred vision. He dropped 40 pounds due to the poisonous substance.
Read was charged with a Class A misdemeanor in the 2nd District Court and was set for her first court appearance Monday, but charges were dropped Oct. 17 due to lack of investigation, according to a Standard-Examiner report that day.
