Patrick Dempsey Teases Career Plans After ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit; Could McDreamy Star In A New Series This Fall?

McDreamy may be dead but he’s certainly not forgotten. For eleven seasons, Patrick Dempsey won the heart of the public with his portrayal of Derek Shepherd, the brilliant and seriously handsome neurosurgeon from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, in the most recent season of the Shonda Rhimes-created medical series, Dempsey’s character met his shocking fate after getting in to a horrific car crash -- one that cost him his life.

“It was an amazing run,” the 49-year-old actor told Entertainment Weekly following his character’s demise, adding that getting written off the show was “just a natural progression.”

But now that Dempsey is no longer saving lives alongside his TV wife Ellen Pompeo, what can fans expect from the actor? Well, Dempsey previously revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he’s focusing "on developing and racing and being a father." The race car driver has three kids: a daughter Talula and twin sons Sullivan and Darby. “Those are my priorities,” he said.

Although the entertainer’s stint on “Grey’s Anatomy” is over, it doesn’t necessarily mean his small screen career is. Entertainment Weekly reported that the actor is currently searching for a new series to star on.

“It’s very normal for an actor who has been on a show for a long time to take meetings, to get reacquainted with other studios and network execs,” an unnamed high-level studio executive, who is set to meet with Dempsey, reportedly told the publication. “It’s just what you do. You never know when that dream project is gonna fall in your lap.”

In fact, one network casting executive dished that it’s quite possible Dempsey might find his “dream project” sooner than he thought.

“I can definitely see him ending up on something this fall,” the source teased.

Even though Dempsey would “love to do something else” following "Grey's Anatomy," the actor said he is fearful he wouldn’t be able to shake his McDreamy image.

“I want to try something different. But will I be allowed to do something different?” he questioned Entertainment Weekly. “Is Derek so identifiable that I can’t go on and be someone else? That will be the challenge. To see if people embrace me as someone else.”
