A pedophile has been sentenced to jail after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a toddler and filming the abuse with the help of his girlfriend.
Michael Colmer, a 45-year-old man from Wales, was sentenced to 17 years in jail Friday after pleading guilty to charges of sexual assault against the toddler and possession of extreme pornographic images.
Shannon Vicary, Colmer's 26-year-old girlfriend, pleaded guilty to two counts of arranging a child sex offense. The court however adjourned her sentencing to May 28 pending her mental health evaluation report, reported local news outlet Wales Online.
The abuse came to light on Oct. 8, 2020, after the police received a report about an email address that was being used to access child pornographic images. They traced the email address and ended up on the couple's property. A search was conducted, during which the police found hundreds of extreme pornographic images from the couple's electronic devices.
The police also found images of a toddler girl being abused by Colmer. The investigation later determined that Vicary had helped her boyfriend Colmer to be alone with the victim on two separate occasions so he could sexually abuse the toddler and film the assault.
The couple's WhatsApp chat also revealed that they had discussed the abuse. The couple also shared fantasies about the acts Colmer would perform on the victim.
"They would speak of their anticipation about what was to come. It began with a commentary on a photograph of children in school uniforms of a young age and that commentary became sexual. Colmer sent Vicary a picture of his penis and made references to what they were going to do the next day," Matthew Cobbe, the prosecutor, told the court.
The victim's mother told the court that the couple's action has devastated her family. She also said the victim had to undergo a traumatic medical examination, a Latin Times report indicated.
"What has happened has significantly affected me. I feel like a bad parent because I did not know what was going on and could not protect my daughter," she said. "I do not understand why these persons did what they did to my daughter. I hope they are never in a position to do this to anyone else."
"This case reveals behaviour by both you and Vicary of an almost unimaginable level of depravity. You, Colmer, have revealed yourself to be a truly despicable human being," David Wynn, the judge, observed during the sentencing.
