What was supposed to be a fun night out for Prince William and Kate Middleton turned into the couple being humiliated -- at least by viewers' account.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended this year's Royal Variety Performance, which aired on ITV on Tuesday, and were subjected to some polarizing jokes from comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

At one point during the show, Ranganathan, who co-hosted the show with Rob Beckett at the London Palladium, took aim at the royal couple's three children -- Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1.

"Like me, you’re blessed with three kids," he began, according to Express. "I imagine every morning they come running into your bedroom and you look at their beautiful faces and say, 'I regret this'."

Beckett then joked about the couple having to find a babysitter.

"Thank you for coming out tonight. You’re on date night. That's exciting," he said. "You got the babysitter until midnight or 1 am? It's worth that extra 20 quid."

Prince William and Kate seemed to enjoy the joke were caught on camera laughing in response, however, viewers weren't as amused. In fact, they even were abashed for the royal couple.

"Utterly crap and embarrassing," one viewer shared, according to the British publication. "Poor Wills and Kate having to endure it all night."

"Poor Kate and William....for having to sit through one of the poorest Royal Variety Shows I've ever seen," another wrote.

How the future King and Queen of England felt about the jokes will likely remain a mystery considering that they've seemed to master the art of etiquette. A prime example of this is when the two were on a royal tour in Canada.

"When I was on tour with William and Kate in 2016 in Canada, we were at this lovely presentation of seasonal Canadian produce. Sun was shining, Kate was looking gorgeous, I was like 'oh this is lovely'," royal commentator Emily Andrews recalled. "And suddenly we see this clam called geoduck."

"It’s a very phallic-looking, kind of long tube and kind of a bulbous part at the end. It’s a delicacy and you eat it. And bless them, they both tried it," Andrews continued. "They managed to stifle any kind of giggles."
