Pet Treat Recall 2013 Update: Bailey’s Choice Treats, FDA Expand Salmonella Contamination Recall [FULL LIST, PHOTO]
Attention pet owners, Bailey’s Choice Pet Treats has expanded their pet treat recall.
According to a report from the Associated Press Wednesday, Bailey’s Choice Pet Treats has issued a voluntary expansion on their Nov. 1st recall to include six U.S. states not included in the original announcement. According to the report, specific lots of the Georgia-based pet food company’s Teriyaki Chicken Treats for dogs are now being recalled in Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia due to a possible Salmonella contamination.
In a statement Tuesday, via ABC-WJLA, Bailey’s Choice Pet Treats owner Roger Thomas said the company is currently working with the Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to successfully remove potentially defective pet treats from stores. To prevent future recalls, Thomas said the company has repaired a digital thermostat that malfunctioned, causing the items to be unable to maintain their proper temperature.
Bailey’s Choice Pet Treats first announced a recall for two lots of their chicken jerky treats earlier this month after products tested positive for Salmonella (a bacteria which is known to cause multiple medical ailments in humans and animals) during routine testing. “We have no reports of anyone or any pet becoming sick,” said the company in a statement, adding a health warning for their two-legged customers. “[Salmonella] is more dangerous to humans. As with all raw foods, after handling jerky products, we recommend washing your hands thoroughly."
On Nov. 8th Baily’s Choice Pet Treats released a statement on their official Facebook page regarding the recent recall. “What we can say at this time is that the Bailey's Choice production facility was found to be 100% free of Salmonella... We are working to return to full production as soon as we are told that we can resume safely. Thank you for your patience.”
The originally recalled products contain the lot dates June 5, 2014 and October 8, 2013, lot number 132881 and the expiration date of February 2014.
