PGA Moves Major Tournament From Trump National, Accused Of Breach Of Contract

In the wake of Wednesday's riot the Capitol, the PGA of America has severed ties with President Donald Trump. The organization announced that the 2022 PGA Championship will no longer be held at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey as previously scheduled.

“The PGA of America Board of Directors voted tonight to exercise the right to terminate the agreement to play the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster,” Jim Richerson, PGA of America President, said Sunday.

“It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA's ability to deliver on many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission.”

A new venue for next year’s tournament has not been announced. It is set to be played from May 19-22, 2022.

One of the PGA's four major tournaments, the PGA Championship is among the most important events on the golf calendar each year.

“We find ourselves in a political situation not of our making,” Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We’re fiduciaries for our members, for the game, for our mission and for our brand. And how do we best protect that? Our feeling was given the tragic events of Wednesday that we could no longer hold it at Bedminster. The damage could have been irreparable. The only real course of action was to leave.”

This is the second time that the PGA has moved a tournament from one of Trump’s golf courses. In 2016, the 2017 World Golf Championship, which is not a major, was moved from Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami to Mexico City. Trump was the presumptive Republican nominee at the time.

The Trump Organziation released a statement opposing the PGA's decision, accusing the organization of breach of contract for a deal that was struck back in 2014 -- before the president's entry into politics.

"We have had a beautiful partnership with the PGA of America and are incredibly disappointed with their decision," a spokesperson for the Trump Organization has told ABC News. "This is a breach of a binding contract and they have no right to terminate the agreement. As an organization we have invested many, many millions of dollars in the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster."

There are no upcoming PGA events currently scheduled to take place at any of Trump’s golf clubs.
