KEY POINTS

  • Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X are arriving on the holiday of 2020
  • Both next-generation gaming consoles feature a custom solid-state drive which is expected to change the gaming industry
  • In a recent interview, Xbox Head Phil Spencer reveals the one thing that he admires about PlayStation 5

One of the major upgrades that fans are looking forward to from both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is the custom solid-state drive (SSD) that both features. Sony and Microsoft are the biggest players in the gaming console industry, and both companies want to outperform and outsell one another. Interestingly, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer recently shared that he admired Sony because of this reason.

In one of his interviews Xbox Head Phil Spencer that it is a good thing that Sony Interactive Entertainment and the PlayStation 5 are investing in a solid-state drive. Spencer, however, underlines that the biggest winners are the developers and the gamers. For developers, they can freely create games that use this technology, considering the more extensive install base, which gamers will greatly benefit.

"I like that Mark Cerny and his team at Sony are also investing in an SSD for the PlayStation 5, the engines and tools can implement corresponding functions," noted Xbox Boss Phil Spencer while talking to PC Games Hardware. "Together we will ensure a larger installed base - and developers will do everything possible to master and support the programming of these hardware capabilities. I don't have a PS5 development kit, I don't even think our Minecraft team does. But it will be exciting to see how the industry will benefit from the comprehensive use of such solutions."

Based on his statement, it appears that Spencer has no idea what the PlayStation 5 is packing and even revealed that Mojang has not yet received a dev kit. This is, of course, not surprising considering that Mojang is owned by Microsoft. Sony would definitely not hand in a dev kit to its competitor before its official launch. Fans are looking forward to knowing what the solid-state drive in Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 could do, and it is interesting to see how this will affect PC gaming.

We will certainly know all these when the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 finally arrive. Both next-generation gaming consoles are slated to arrive sometime in the holiday of 2020, which is, of course, just a few months away.
