A Phoenix police commander was fatally shot and another two officers were wounded after a gunman opened fire Sunday night when police responded to a domestic dispute.
The Phoenix Police Department said Cmdr. Greg Carnicle responded to the domestic call with Officers Marissa Dowhan and Alicia Hubert. The three were reportedly sent to a home in north Phoenix over a “dispute between roommates” that was allegedly escalating.
Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said the 22-year-old man, whose name hasn’t been released, was reportedly cooperating with the officers at first, but allegedly became uncooperative when asked to leave. He then reportedly produced a gun and shot the three officers before barricading himself inside the home. More officers arrived shortly after the responding officers were shot, leading to a standoff between police and the suspect.
The wounded officers were rushed to nearby hospitals during the standoff, where Carnicle was pronounced dead after arriving. Dowhan and Hubert underwent surgery and are expected to make full recoveries.
The standoff ultimately ended around 10 p.m. after the suspect was reportedly shot by police after allegedly trying to leave the home armed. He was reportedly shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
Carnicle was an officer with over 30 years of experience and reportedly months away from his retirement. Dowhan and Hubert had less than three years of experience.
“Tonight we lost a true hero,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams told reporters.
“I can tell you this about Greg – I knew him for 30 years, he and I worked together in the Maryvale Precinct, and used to enjoy way too much Church’s Chicken on duty. So to be able to say that one of my good friends is lost is troubling.
“Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers and keep the Carincle family in your thoughts and prayers. And do know that as soon as we wrap this up we’ll share this information with you.”
