After starring in two Hallmark Channel movies together — “Enchanted Christmas” and “Love at Sea” — real-life married couple Alexa and Carlos PenaVega are teaming up for a new Hallmark Movies & Mysteries series.

The first flick in their “Picture Perfect Mysteries” franchise, titled “Newlywed and Dead,” premieres Sunday and centers on their characters working together to solve a murder. While the June Weddings event might be happening over on Hallmark’s sister network, the PenaVega’s mystery flick does still tap into that theme with Alexa starring as a wedding photographer and the murder happening during the ceremony.

“Small-town New England professional wedding photographer Allie Adams (Alexa) finds herself directly in the middle of a murder mystery when the groom, the son in a prominent and wealthy local family, is suddenly shot and killed during the ceremonial first dance,” the synopsis begins. “Suspicion immediately turns towards Allie’s big brother Greg (Jon Cor, “Love on Safari”), the long-time ex-boyfriend of the bride, and Allie begins her own amateur investigation to clear Greg’s name.”

The synopsis continues: “As she pours over the hundreds of photographs for possible suspects, Allie tries to help the newest Detective on the force Sam (Carlos), as they hunt for both the killer and the missing murder weapon. When the list of possible suspects grows, Allie and Sam continue to bump into each other as they follow a multitude of leads, and Sam reluctantly accepts Allie’s help, as she has a real knack for spotting missing details.”

Throughout “Picture Perfect Mysteries: Newlywed and Dead,” which was directed by Ron Oliver and written by Walter Klenhard and Marcy Holland, Allie not only helps Sam solve the crime before the murderer can kill again, but she also helps him adjust to his new life in a small town.

The film’s cast also includes Trezzo Mahoro (Noah), Paul McGillion (Nick Carlin), Pippa Mackie (Sarah), Marci T. House (Chief Dunn), Sunita Prasad (Maya), Ian Robert Morton (Captain Johns). Lindsay Maxwell (Jenna), Keith Mackechnie (Mr. Davis), Roz Murray (Mrs. Davis), Kurt Szarka (Kevin Davis) and Nelson Wong (DJ Kenny Kwon).

Catch the PenaVegas in “Picture Perfect Mysteries: Newlywed and Dead” on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.
