  • Meghan Markle had only met Oprah Winfrey once before inviting her to her 2018 wedding with Prince Harry, a report says
  • Piers Morgan tweeted that he was "shocked they’d ever met at all"
  • Twitter users slammed Morgan for mocking Markle and accused him of being bitter over not receiving an invite to the wedding

Piers Morgan was "shocked" to learn one detail about Meghan Markle's friendship with Oprah Winfrey, who scored the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first sit-down television interview since stepping back as senior royals.

On Tuesday, Morgan, a longtime critic of Markle and Prince Harry, took to Twitter to comment on a report from The Times U.K., which said that Winfrey had only met the duchess once prior to being invited to their 2018 royal wedding.

"Shocked to read in The Times that Meghan Markle had only met Oprah Winfrey once before inviting her to sit upfront with the Royals at her wedding. Shocked they’d ever met at all," he tweeted.

The "Good Morning Britain" host also responded to a tweet from lawyer and founder of Women in Leadership Publication Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, who wrote, "If anyone can get to the bottom of Harry and Meghan split from royal duties/UK, it's Oprah. We love to see it. Bet Royal family wished they treated #MeghanAndHarry better now."

Replying to Mos-Shogbamimu's statement, Morgan said, "No, we all just wish they’d shown the Queen more respect."

Morgan's latest tweet about Markle received mixed responses from Twitter users, with some accusing him of still being bitter that the Sussexes hadn’t invited him to their wedding.

"Still pissed at not getting invited to the wedding? Is this why you’ve embarked on a 5 year hate campaign against her? Give it up lad, you’re embarrassing yourself," one commented.

"It’s so cringey how obsessed you are," another wrote.

"And she'd met you all those times and still didn't invite you Piersy. Yet you still cry about it and obsess over her every day," a third user added.

"Leave her alone. Usually I agree with you but constantly going on about Meghan like this is unfair and bullying. If you don't like her fine but don't slate her every 5minutes in media," Tasha Tidley commented.

Others sided with Morgan, claiming that Markle didn't know George and Amal Clooney but invited them to the wedding as well. (It has been reported that Prince Harry, who was friends with the actor, had been the one to introduce Markle to the couple when they were still dating.)

"I find it very odd all the celebrities they invited to that wedding that they didn’t really know. Trying to set up their future, I suppose," a person wrote.

Prince Harry and Markle’s upcoming interview with Winfrey is the result of a three-year discussion between the duchess and the legendary TV host, according to The Times U.K. Winfrey reportedly got in touch with Markle through CBS, and they spoke on the phone.

"Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special" will air on CBS on March 7 at 8 p.m. EST/PT.
