French police on Wednesday morning arrested two suspects in a Paris jewelry heist, which had included a man dressed in a suit who had fled on an electric scooter with more than $2.5 million in jewels from the renowned boutique Chaumet.

According to local reports, witnesses who may have been able to identify the thief were distracted by the presence of action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was nearby at an optometrist's office.

Officials said the two suspects are 54 and 44 years old. The two men were apprehended at a highway rest stop near the France-Germany border and were carrying Montenegrin documents. Officials confirmed a “substantial part” of the jewels were recovered.

The mayor of Paris’ 8th arrondissement described the event as “mind-boggling, daring, unprecedented and regrettable,” according to Le Parisien newspaper.

The theft occurred on Tuesday just after 5 p.m. local time and was caught on a security camera.

A gray-haired man reportedly pulled out a knife after the gems were put on display and then placed them in a bag before using the dealer’s security badge to exit the store.

He fled with the bag full of jewels on an electric scooter, wearing black sunglasses and a disposable mask. He was seen wearing an all-gray suit with a white shirt.

There have been no reports linking Van Damme with the robbery.
