Police Body Cam Video Shows 93-Year-Old Florida Woman Rejecting Eviction

Only a few days before her 94th birthday, Juanita Fitzgerald was taken to jail for refusing to leave her Eustis, Florida, residence. Fitzgerald lived at Franklin House, a retirement community in Eustis, for eight years before falling behind on rent, according to WFTV-9 in Orlando. Police officers had to forcibly remove Fitzgerald from Franklin House and take her to jail Tuesday night, which was captured on an officer’s bodycam:

Fitzgerald reportedly told police “unless you carry me out of here, I’m not going anywhere.” According to WFTV-9, police tried to avoid arresting her by offering help from several agencies. Fitzgerald reportedly refused and was promptly arrested for trespassing at Franklin House. She was jailed on a $500 bond, but was released by a judge and handed off to a caregiver.

After two nights in jail, Fitzgerald seems to be in good spirits. She is not the only senior citizen controversially served with an eviction notice recently, as a San Jose couple was forced out of their duplex in December, despite one of them suffering from cancer, according to KTVU-2.

A separate story out of San Jose in December saw about 80 elderly residents of an assisted living facility forced out so the landlord could turn the location into something else, KRON-4 reported. They each had 60 days to find new places to live at the time of their evictions.
