Premier League: Jurgen Klopp Offers Injury Update Ahead Of Liverpool's Showdown Vs Wolves
KEY POINTS
- Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-1 in the league Tuesday
- Joe Gomez picked up an injury in the first half
- The Reds' final league game is on Sunday against Wolves
Jurgen Klopp offered an update on defender Joe Gomez's injury after Liverpool FC defeated Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday.
Gomez, who was starting only his fourth league game this season, suffered a leg injury that forced him off the field at half-time. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson replaced him in the second half, with James Milner moving to the right-back position.
"I hope we are lucky. Joe himself has pain but not too much. He got, one time, a real shock to the system, but he is sitting in the dressing room and when I spoke to him he was in a good mood. I think maybe we were probably lucky but we have to figure that out," Klopp said after Liverpool's crucial game against Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium.
The 2-1 win means Liverpool are just a point behind Manchester City in the Premier League title race with just one game left in the campaign. If Pep Guardiola's City win their season-finale against Aston Villa on Sunday, they will win the league title regardless of Liverpool's result.
However, if Man City draw or lose to Villa and Liverpool beat Wolves at Anfield on Sunday, Klopp's side will lift the coveted Premier League trophy.
Gomez, who is a versatile defender, playing both as a center-back and a full-back, has been an injury-prone player and has had several layoffs under Klopp's charge at Anfield. He has previously dealt with an Achilles injury and various knee problems. He missed as many as 39 games across competitions for Liverpool last season due to patella problems, according to Transfermarkt.
With just two games to go in the 2021-22 campaign, Liverpool's chase of the historic quadruple is still on as they can win two more trophies if everything goes their way in the coming days. Klopp's Reds have also clinched the League Cup and FA Cup.
Duirng Liverpool's trip to St. Mary's on Tuesday, the Anfield side was also without key players Mohamed Salah and Virgin van Dijk. The duo was rested as a precaution after they picked up minor injuries during Liverpool's FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
