  • Bukayo Saka is expected to sign new deal with Arsenal soon
  • Mikel Arteta reveals he has been having good talks with the German foootball player
  • Arteta is going with Emiliano Martinez to be the top goalie until end of season

Bukayo Saka is one of the players who was believed to be leaving Emirates Stardium. But it appears talks have been going on for quite some time between the Gunners and the Saka camp. According to manager Mikel Arteta, it may only be a matter of time before a new deal will be finalized.

Saka has one year remaining in his current deal with the Gunners, and several teams have expressed interest. At the top of the list is Borussia Dortmund, which has kept close tabs on the situation of the 18-year-old winger.

Saka signed with Arsenal in 2018 and has been a big asset to the Gunners. After getting a call to the senior team by former manager Unai Emery, the English footballer continues to impress under the watch of Arteta. This season, Saka has accounted for eight goals and 11 assists – something he has been able to achieve playing different positions.

“I am very positive that everything is going to be done with Bukayo very shortly,” Arteta said.

“The communications between the club, agents and the family has been going on for months and is very fluent. The player and family knows how much trust I have in him. He is just showing that every week and his consistency level is getting better and better,” he added.

With the contract situation of Saka likely to be resolved soon, Arteta will focus on other matters for Arsenal. With Bernd Leno suffering knee ligament damage, Emiliano Martinez has been chosen to fill up the void. Though Leno’s injury is reportedly not as serious as initially thought, he will be missing the remainder of the season, according to Goal.com.

Arteta has full confidence in Martinez, aware that the Argentine has been waiting for this opportunity to be the first-choice goalkeeper of the team. The 27-year-old has been at Emirates Stadium for the past 10 years and has made only seven league appearances.

“What I know about Emi is the way he prepares himself, how patient he has been and how much he has been waiting for this opportunity,” Arteta said.

With the opportunity, some feel that if Martinez performs well, Leno could face a rough climb back to reclaiming his position once he is good to go. Arteta explained that he does expect that to happen and added that Martinez is not the no. 2 goalkeeper in the team for nothing.

“The No 2 goalkeeper at Arsenal has to be ready to play, not just to be a backup player and when you are needed, to make the difference for your team,” Arteta said.
