‘Pretty Little Liars' Star Troian Bellisario Opens Up About Struggle With Anorexia On Instagram

“Pretty Little Liars” star Troian Bellisario recently opened up about her struggle with anorexia at a young age.

On her Instagram account, the 31-year-old actress shared that most anorexics tend to present themselves as though everything is okay when this isn’t true. “Gone were the day where I was just a happy care free kid who was running around and suddenly I felt this inability to interact with other people and to nourish myself,” she said.

The actress went on to say that anorexia, which is classified as a mental illness, requires early detection, diagnosis and treatment. In partnership the media company ATTN (pronounced as attention), Bellisario is encouraging her 46.6 million followers on Instagram to vote for a president who supports the treatment for mental illness.

“For programs in schools to support students dealing with mental illness and for the continued support and treatment (without stigma) of adults to not just survive but thrive,” she wrote. The actress ended her lengthy post with the hashtag “I’m With Her,” which is being used by presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Meanwhile, Bellisario first opened up about her battle against anorexia two years ago. In an interview with Seventeen, the actress also admitted to self-harming when she was just a junior in high school. “I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school. Being a teenager is chaotic because you’re kind of coming into your own. I didn’t know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired,” she said.

Bellisario plays the role of Spencer Hastings in “Pretty Little Liars” Season 7. The hit Freeform TV series will return with new episodes sometime this winter.
