Prince Charles didn’t immediately confess his infidelity to Princess Diana and only did so at a specific time.

Jonathan Dimbleby, a broadcaster, said in the documentary “Charles: Private Man, The Public Role” that Prince Charles only told Princess Diana that he was unfaithful to her when their marriage became irretrievably broken down.

“Did you try to be faithful and honorable to your wife when you took on the vow of marriage?” Dimbleby asked the future King. Prince Charles replied, “Yes, absolutely,” (via Express).

When the broadcaster asked if Prince Charles was really faithful to his wife, he said, “Yes, until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried.”

Dimbleby’s shocking revelation came after Prince Charles’ private secretary, Richard Aylard, asked him to write a book for the 25th anniversary of the Prince of Wales’ investiture.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles announced their separation in 1992, but their divorce was only finalized in 1996.

Penny Junor, a royal commentator, and the author said that Dimbleby’s documentary was what sparked rumors regarding the royal couple’s divorce, as well as Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

“It had begun as such a well-intentioned exercise, but the consequences were unimaginable and the deal that Aylard struck with Dimbleby, without consulting anyone in the household, had left the prince very exposed. ‘Charles: Private Man, The Public Role,’ which ran for two and a half hours and was seen by 14 million viewers, was directly responsible for Andrew Parker Bowles divorcing Camilla, for Diana’s devastating Panorama interview – watched by 23 million viewers – and for her divorce from the Prince of Wales. Because in just three minutes out of that two and a half hour of good works, the Prince admitted his adultery,” Junor said.

The royal expert also called the move a disaster, Aylard was forced to confirm Prince Charles and Bowles’ affair to the public the day after the documentary was released.
