Prince Charles didn’t want to reign with Princess Diana by his side.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage wasn’t a happy one. In fact, it was revealed that Prince Charles didn’t want to be king with Princess Diana as his Queen.

According to James Whitaker in a 1995 report for the Daily Mirror, Prince Charles was “shattered” at Princess Diana’s insistence because she didn’t want a divorce. As a result, the future king took steps to ensure that his estranged wife would never be crowned queen.

“Charles has said: ‘I will never sit on the throne with that woman at my side!’” Whitaker wrote.

“He has told his most senior aides and legal advisers to draw up plans aimed at ‘sidelining’ Diana before any coronation.”

The report came as Prince Charles joined an estimated 200 million TV viewers watching Princess Diana’s infamous Panorama interview. The Prince of Wales reportedly learned about the explosive interview on his 47th birthday while he was on a visit to Germany.

At the weekend, he had a heart-to-heart talk with his mistress and now wife Camilla Parker Bowles. She joined Prince Charles at Highgrove and they talked late into the night about the implications of Princess Diana’s interview. For his part, his mind was finalized, he wanted Princess Diana to start the divorce proceedings.

The Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation in 1992. After four years, their divorce was finalized. The couple shared two sons Prince William and Prince Harry who were very affected by their split.

According to Andrew Morton in his 2011 book “William and Catherine,” the Duke of Sussex was “bewildered and almost indifferent.” On the other hand, the Duke of Cambridge burst into tears.

Although they were broken-hearted that their parents were parting ways, Prince William still composed himself and told his mother, “I hope you both be happy now.”

Prince William and Prince Harry witnessed how their parents bickered and how their argument always ended up with Princess Diana in tears. In fact, one time Prince William yelled at Prince Charles “I hate you” for making Princess Diana cry. Prince Harry also had a similar encounter with their dad for the same reason.

In related news, Prince Charles is determined to make his second wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, a queen. In fact, he is very proud of Camilla and is making efforts so she will receive the highest title when he reigns.
