Prince Charles is used to walking beside his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at events. But this week, he was forced to walk behind his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall attended a ceremony to mark the commissioning of a new aircraft carrier that was named after the heir to the throne. Prince Charles walked behind his wife because Camilla played an important role as lady sponsor at the engagement.

A spokesperson for the Royal Navy explained the logic behind the role of Camilla.

“The role of the lady sponsor is akin to being a godmother, attending significant events during the life of the ship and taking an interest not only in the ship's activities but also the welfare of the ship's company,” the source told Express.

The ceremony also featured live music, and the Band of the Royal Marines treated everyone with a few songs. Prince Charles and Camilla also cut the commissioning cake, and they enjoyed various sweet treats that were baked for the event.

Camilla also gave a brief speech in which she called the new aircraft simply breathtaking. She also said that her home, Clarence House, would fit nearly 25 times onto the flight deck.

Meanwhile, some details about Prince Charles' marriage to Princess Diana was revisited this week. During his interview with The Daily Telegraph years ago, Prince Charles said that he thought the Princess of Wales was very jolly, amusing, and attractive.

But shortly after they tied the knot, things changed between the couple. During their engagement interview, the future king was asked if he was in love with Princess Diana and he gave a cryptic answer.

Years later, the late royal called the interview ghastly and said that she was hurt when she heard Prince Charles’ response.

“I thought, what a thick question. So I said, ‘Yes, of course,’ and Charles turned around and said, ‘whatever love means.’ And that threw me completely. I thought, what a strange answer,” Princess Diana said in “Diana: In Her Own Words.”
