Prince Charles’ recently unearthed throwback photo might have just proved that he also shared a special relationship with Queen Elizabeth II as a young boy.

In the throwback snap, a young Prince Charles is riding a deer, and he couldn’t be more excited. The adorable toddler is laughing hysterically while staring at Her Majesty.

Princess Margaret is standing behind the deer and she’s also making sure that her nephew won’t fall off the deer. Also, in the photo are King George V and Prince Philip.

When Prince Charles was still very young, he must have been close to his mom. But when he got a bit older, the Queen decided to leave her two eldest children under the care of their nanny.

Since Prince Charles and Princess Anne didn’t grow up with both of their parents around, they forged a close relationship with their nanny. At the age of 8, the future King experienced his first heartbreak after he was separated from his beloved nanny, Mabel Anderson.

In the book “Charles at Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes, and Dreams,” royal author Robert Jobson described Anderson as Prince Charles’ rock. Royal expert Ingrid Seward also said that the heir to the throne cried his heart out after he was sent to the boarding school Cheam.

Seward said in “My Husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 Years of the Royal Marriage,” “His [Charles] first few days as a boarder at Cheam, he would later recall, were the most miserable of his life.” Anderson also told Seward that Prince Charles dreaded going to school.

“Heartbroken, he would write to Mispy every day. He used to cry into his letters and say ‘I miss you,’” Seward said.

Several years later, Prince Charles’ sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, also became very close to their nanny. And this left Princess Diana feeling jealous and worried that her sons might love their nanny more than they love her.
