Prince Charles’ Only Obstacle In Marrying Camilla Parker Bowles Was This Royal
Prince Charles reportedly had one obstacle to overcome before he could marry Camilla Parker Bowles years ago.
Royal biographer Jessica Jayne said that Camilla had a tough time during the early years of her relationship with Prince Charles because she was regarded as a homewrecker and the third person in the future king and Princess Diana’s marriage. But despite all of the criticisms she received, Camille never complained or spoke out.
Jayne said that Prince Charles and Camilla had to wait patiently until the public’s grief over Princess Diana’s death ebbed away before the former formally introduced the latter to his eldest son, Prince William.
In the documentary “Prince Charles Biography: The Life of the Prince of Wales and Future King of England,” the author revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall attended the 50th birthday celebration of Camilla’s sister in 1999. The royal couple was photographed leaving the Ritz Carlton hotel together. This signified that their relationship was already official.
In the same year, Camilla joined Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry’s holiday cruise to the Greek islands. At this point, Prince William and Prince Harry already acknowledged Camilla’s new role in their lives, but Prince Charles knew that there was still one obstacle he needed to face: the Queen Mother.
“The Queen Mother may have perceived that Prince Charles and Camilla’s relationship was reminiscent of the relationship of the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII, with Wallis Simpson,” Jayne said.
King Edward VIII fell in love with Simpson, who was twice divorced. Their romance eventually led to King Edward VIII’s abdication so that he could wed Simpson. After he abdicated, his role as king was handed over to Queen Elizabeth II’s dad.
“The Queen Mother was horrified that Prince Charles and the late princess put love before their duty to the nation. As a result, she refused to meet Camilla and absolutely forbid the name of the woman to be mentioned in her presence,” Jayne said.
And as a sign of respect for his grandmother, Prince Charles didn’t wed Camilla while Queen Mother was still alive. They tied the knot in a civil ceremony in 2005.
