Prince Charles Pressured Camilla To Attend This Event; Duchess’s Attendance Branded ‘Inappropriate’
Camilla Parker Bowles was pressured to attend an event where many didn’t expect her to show up.
According to Katie Nicholl in her book “William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls,” the Duchess of Cornwall gained a lot of negative attention when it was reported that she would be attending Princess Diana’s memorial service.
Initially, the duchess had no plans of showing up due to the controversy between her and the late Princess of Wales, but Prince Charles forced her to be there. The future king wanted to prepare the public for Camilla’s attendance that he asked his aides to tell the press about it.
According to Nicholls, there was a furor when the people learned that Camilla would be attending the event. Personally, the duchess wanted to stay away from it, but Prince Charles insisted that she join them.
Nicholls added that Camilla and Prince Charles argued over her attendance at the event. As the occasion neared, the Duchess of Cornwall experienced a terrible pressure on whether she should be there or not.
The Prince of Wales who can be stubborn when it comes to Princess Diana insisted that Sir Michael Peat, his private secretary, brief his press aides about Camilla’s attendance at Princess Diana’s memorial service. However, not everyone agreed with the future king’s plans.
“I know such services should be an occasion for forgiveness, but I can’t help feeling Camilla’s attendance is deeply inappropriate,” Rosa Monckton told British newspaper Mail on Sunday, as per Nicholl’s book.
Since the public did not embrace Camilla at the time, Queen Elizabeth II intervened and gave Camilla her blessing to stay away from the event. The Duchess of Cornwall then released a personal statement to explain why she’s skipping the event.
“On reflection, I believe my attendance could divert attention from the purpose of the occasion, which is to focus on the life and service of Diana,” Camilla said.
The public wasn’t warm to Camilla after learning about her affair with Prince Charles while he was still married to Princess Diana. The late Princess of Wales said in an interview that their marriage didn’t work because “there were three of us.”
Royal biographer Robert Lacey also blamed Prince Charles for his failed marriage to Princess Diana because he was already emotionally committed to another woman when he married her. According to Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, the prince was also cruel to Prince William and Prince Harry’s mother.
