Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth Didn’t Comfort Each Other Following Princess Diana’s Accident
Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II were never close.
According to royal biographer Penny Junor in her book “The Duchess: The Untold Story,” the Prince of Wales and Her Majesty didn’t comfort each other after hearing the devastating news that Princess Diana was involved in a car crash that caused her death.
“Never was the relationship between the prince and his mother more sharply demonstrated than that night,” Junor wrote.
“They were just feet away from each other in separate rooms, divided by paper-thin walls, but they didn’t go one another, either for comfort or to discuss logistics,” she continued.
Instead of Queen Elizabeth II comforting her son for the tragic accident that happened to the mother of his two children, it was actually his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles, and friends who consoled the future king.
“It was left to Camilla, five hundred miles away, and other friends the Prince rang, to do the comforting through what remained of the night.”
Junor said that Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II were emotionally distant. In fact, Prince Charles was “infuriated” following the Princess of Wales’ death because Her Majesty refused to acknowledge Camilla as his new partner.
Just like the Queen, the public wasn’t warm to Camilla and Prince Charles. The majority’s sympathy was with Princess Diana who blamed the two for her failed marriage.
In her infamous interview, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom said that her relationship with Prince Charles didn’t work because “there were there of us in this marriage.” Thus, the future king had to introduce Camilla appropriately to his two sons.
The Duchess of Cornwall and Duke of Cambridge’s first meeting was unplanned. Prince William reportedly just rang the palace that he would be home from school. Camilla was there because they didn’t expect Prince William’s presence.
Prince Charles left Prince William and Camilla alone, so they could talk. When the duchess left the room, she reportedly asked for a gin and tonic. However, their first meeting was actually friendly.
As of late, many are wondering if Camilla will become Queen Mother when Prince William takes over the throne. Some believe that it’s unlikely as she’s not the biological mom of the Duke of Cambridge. Meanwhile, it’s also possible since she’s legally his stepmother.
