Prince Charles was reportedly warned by some people close to him not to marry Princess Diana.

Many thought that Prince Charles found a perfect bride in Princess Diana. On the other hand, several were convinced that she found her real-life prince in the person of the Prince of Wales. However, not everyone actually approved Princess Diana for the heir apparent.

According to two royal biographers, Prince Charles’ cousin Norton Knatchbull, Lord Romsey and his wife, Penelope, advised the future king to not marry Princess Diana. Penelope was concerned about their 12-year age difference and she didn’t think that the two had anything in common.

Sally Bedell Smith wrote in her book “Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life,” that Penelope was also concerned about Princess Diana’s true intention in marrying a royal. For her, she looked to be “auditioning for a central role in a costume drama.”

In Penny Junor’s book “The Duchess: The Untold Story,” the author claimed that Penelope and her husband advised Prince Charles against pushing with the wedding. Several years after the Prince and Princess of Wales got married, Prince Charles showed how he regretted his decision of not listening to his cousins.

“The Romseys were among the last two to go even though the couple had stayed at their holiday home in Eleuthera when Diana was pregnant,” Junor wrote. “When the princess threw an ornament at him in the midst of yet another screaming match, the prince finally lost his cool and said, ‘I should have listened to Norton … He said I should never have married you.’”

While Prince Charles’ cousin warned him against marrying Princess Diana, his family encouraged him to walk down the aisle because they believed that she was the perfect virginal bride for the future king. In fact, PrincePhilip gave Prince Charles an ultimatum to marry the People’s Princess.

At the time, Prince Charles and Princess Diana often appeared together on social occasions and the princess had grown anxious of Camilla Parker Bowles’ presence in the prince’s life. Prince Philip advised his son to marry Princess Diana before her reputation was ruined. Anyway, he could just return to Camilla if his marriage with Princess Diana would not work after five years.
