Prince Harry received flak on social media after saying that the COVID-19 pandemic is ecological retribution and reprimanding humanity for taking Earth’s natural resources for granted.

"At the end of the day, nature is our life source," Prince Harry said in an interview for WaterBear, a streaming platform dedicated to environmental documentaries.

"Somebody said to me at the beginning of the pandemic, it’s almost as though Mother Nature has sent us to our rooms for bad behavior to really take a moment and think about what we’ve done," he added.

Prince Harry also said that the pandemic reminded him about how interconnected humanity is, not just as people but through nature. "We take so much from [Mother Nature] and we rarely give a lot back," he added.

However, some called out Prince Harry for having a lavish lifestyle that "isn't sustainable" despite talking about protecting the environment. They pointed out that the Duke of Sussex is still flying private and living in a 19,000-square-foot estate with nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms with his wife Meghan Markle and their son.

"If he’s worried about the environment lead by example. No more jet flights, downsize the house. Grab an 800 square foot apartment somewhere and enjoy," one commented.

"When you start flying coach and live in a studio apartment... let’s talk," another tweeted.

"Who cares what a spoiled royal with little connections to real life has to say?" a third user wrote.

Some fired back at Prince Harry's statements with conspiracy theories, while others agreed that humanity abusing nature is causing diseases like COVID-19 to crop up more and more.

"That’s not exactly what he said. But he makes a good point. We don’t deserve our planet," one commented. "Second his argument," another wrote.

Last year, Prince Harry and Markle were criticized by British media for flying with their then-newborn son Archie via a private jet provided by Ellen DeGeneres, Pink and Elton John.

At the time, the Duke of Sussex explained that he usually flies commercial and only makes an exception when there is a need for more security.

"I spend 99% of my life traveling the world by commercial," he said, USA Today reported. "Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe, and it’s genuinely as simple as that."

"But, as I said in my speech, for me, what it is is about balance," he continued. "And, if I have to do that – not a decision that I would want to take, but if I have to do that – then I would ensure, as I have done previously and I will continue to make sure that I do is to balance out that impact that I have."
