Prince Harry reportedly felt left out when he and Prince William were still kids.

The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex were rumored to be having a rift. When they were still kids, Prince Harry had always known that Prince William was special. But this apparently drove a wedge between the brothers.

Katie Nicholl claimed in her 2010 book, “William and Harry,” that Prince William received more attention than his younger brother because he was groomed to be the next king. Prince Harry was aware of the pecking order and was used to having Prince William being called by Queen Mother for special meetings without him.

“When they were little William would often be invited to Clarence House to see his great-grandmother without Harry. ‘I’m off to see Gran Gran,’ he would announce, leaving Harry to play alone in the nursery,” Nicholl wrote.

“Diana was aware that Harry felt left out and doted on him," the royal biographer continued.

Princess Diana’s friend, Simon Simmons, told the author that the scenario was fine with little Prince Harry because he loved having his mom, Princess Diana, around and didn’t want to compete with Prince William.

Prince Harry had always taken a positive outlook about being behind Prince William’s shadow. According to Ken Wharfe, Princess Diana’s former royal protection officer, the Duke of Sussex made a declaration when they were inside the car with the late Princess of Wales and the boys’ nanny.

Prince Harry reportedly said that it’s alright for him if he would not be king because that would mean that he could do anything he wanted. Prince William “gleefully liked” the acknowledgment from his younger brother.

However, things weren’t as simple when they grew up. When Prince Harry was 16, he dodged an official police warning that sent shockwaves through the royal family, and for some reason, he reportedly started resenting Prince William. Prince Harry felt that he was blamed for everything, while the Duke of Cambridge always got away “scot-free.” It was Prince Harry and Prince William’s first serious rift.

Prince William had “hardly been a model of decorum” to his younger brother. Following the incident, the two princes were barely on speaking terms.

Prince William felt guilty about Prince Harry taking all the blame. As a result, he visited him in Eton to end their rift. Prince Harry eventually forgave him because he realized it was not Prince William’s fault. However, their reconciliation took time because Prince Harry was reeling for a while.
