Prince Harry was fond of his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.
In his new book, "Spare," the Duke of Sussex recalled attending a costume party with his older brother, Prince William, and Middleton shortly after being introduced to the future Princess of Wales.
"She was carefree, sweet, kind. She'd done a gap year in Florence, knew about photography, art. And clothes. She loved clothes. Her name was Kate," Prince Harry wrote, Us Weekly reported. "I forget what native or colonial thing she was wearing to the party, but with her help, Willy had chosen for himself some kind of ... feline outfit."
Prince Harry remembered him and Middleton having "a great time" laughing at Prince William over the latter's costume. The theme of the party was reportedly to wear a "ridiculous" outfit.
The Duke of Sussex admitted that he hoped to make his sister-in-law giggle.
"I liked seeing Kate laugh. Better yet, I liked making her laugh. And I was quite good at it. My transparently silly side connected with her heavily disguised silly side," he added. "Whenever I worried that Kate was going to be the one to take Willy from me, I consoled myself with thoughts of all our future laughing fits together, and I told myself how great everything would be when I had a serious girlfriend who could laugh along with us."
However, he also claimed that his older brother and Princess Kate encouraged him to dress up as a Nazi soldier in 2005 in what would later become one of Prince Harry's biggest scandals.
"I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said," he wrote of asking the couple to choose between a British pilot's uniform or a Nazi uniform. "I rented it, plus a silly mustache, and went back to the house. I tried it all on. They both howled. Worse than Willy's leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point."
Prince Harry, who was only 20 years old at the time, faced intense backlash when he was photographed wearing the costume.
"I am very sorry if I caused any offense or embarrassment to anyone," Prince Harry said in a 2005 statement.
Royal historian Robert Lacey claimed in his 2020 book "Battle of Brothers," serialized in The Daily Mail, that the incident sparked the feud between the royal siblings.
"It made Harry feel resentful and even alienated," Lacey wrote.
Sources told Us Weekly that Middleton wasn't thrilled with the way Prince Harry portrayed her in his book.
"Kate feels that Harry's actions are atrocious," an anonymous source claimed to Us Weekly. "She is appalled at him for dragging her name through the dirt and is finding it hard to forgive."
Another unnamed source echoed the same sentiment in a separate Us Weekly report. The future king and queen consort were reportedly "very upset" with Prince Harry's memoir, which "hit them very hard."
"They're both confiding in each other right now," the source added of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
"Spare" will hit bookshelves on Tuesday.
