Prince Harry Was ‘So Nervous’ Royal Event Would Fall Apart For This Reason
Prince Harry’s life in the royal family has prepared him for a variety of circumstances, but the Duke of Sussex admitted to being completely unprepared when he launched the first Invictus Games in 2014.
The sporting event encourages wounded and injured servicemen and women to harness the power of sport to inspire and support the rehabilitation of themselves, and to generate a wider understanding of those who serve their country.
In a video shared to the Sussex Royal Instagram account, Harry spoke about the fifth anniversary of the games and his feelings on day one of the very first event.
“Nerves, nerves, about everything. The whole planning, whether it was going to come together, whether people were going to turn up, whether we were going to fill seats. The weather because the opening ceremony was outdoors, and selfishly, I guess, my speech,” he explained.
“On the actual night, we had the podium right in front of all of the competitors, and I could just see all of their faces. They started chanting, and I was so nervous, I was shaking. I knew I had a certain window to be able to get my words out, and we were also running behind, so I rushed it, and it’s probably one of the worst speeches I’ve ever given.”
Despite his nerves, the crowd cheered for Prince Harry, and the games were a success. In his Instagram post about the anniversary, the Duke of Sussex praised the participants and patrons, who helped keep the event alive.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in the Invictus movement, from you the competitors, and your families, to the thousands of volunteers and supporters - you have all guarded the Invictus spirit, while creating a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country at home or abroad,” the statement read.
“Thank you for the inspiration, thank you for the laughs, and thank you for the memories! I’m so proud of everything we’ve achieved together. Once served always serving!”
The 2020 Invictus Games are expected to be held in The Hague, The Netherlands.
