Prince Harry’s Popularity Causing Meghan Markle To Fail At Impressing Royal Fans
Although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been married for over a year, the former “Suits” star has not been embraced by the public.
While wives of past heirs to the British thrones have faced public backlash, Princess Diana’s former secretary believes Meghan is dealing with a different type of negativity.
During a “60 Minutes” Australia segment, Patrick Jephson claimed Prince Harry’s popularity, and Meghan’s cultural differences may be responsible for the negative press the 38-year-old has been receiving.
“Anybody coming into that family, anybody particularly marrying the very popular, Prince Harry is going to have to pass a pretty stringent exam by the media, and indeed, by the public at large,” he explained.
While Prince Harry has received some backlash for his and Meghan’s decisions, his wife’s American background has been blamed for influencing his choices.
“Meghan is different, she’s American, she’s an actress, she’s a divorcee. She’s older than Diana was when Diana died, yes, she is a breath of fresh air, but she is culturally different,” he explained.
Although Jephson claims Meghan is a positive addition to the royal family, he believes British people may let stereotypes shape their judgment about the Duchess of Sussex.
“People in Britain think they have an understanding of what America is, of what it represents - and it isn’t always positive,” he said.
“So yes, it’s exotic to have an American actress in the Royal Family, but mixed-race that’s fantastic - that’s undeniably good news, and a sign the Royal Family, the monarchy, have moved with the times,” the former palace employee added.
Even though Jepson claimed the monarchy has begun to modernize, he believes Meghan does not understand her role in the royal family, and what the position means to the UK.
“Meghan isn’t and never has, been an ordinary British person, so part of her challenge is to work out what it feels like, what it is to be an ordinary British person, not to be one, but to understand how best to use her extraordinary influence and high profile.”
Meghan married Prince Harry in May 2018. The actress is still settling into her new roles as the Duchess of Sussex and most recently, mom to baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
