Prince Harry’s Party Boy Past Could Save Royal Family And Meghan Markle’s Reputation
Although there have been some doubts about the importance placed of the Royal Family, Prince Harry could reportedly be the key to securing the future of the British monarchy.
Before his marriage to Meghan Markle, Harry had a reputation as a “Party Prince.” Once he turned his life around, a royal commentator claimed it represented the strength of the monarchy.
During a 2012 episode of the BBC Radio 4 show, “Beyond Belief,” political philosopher Philip Blond reflected on Harry’s transition from a party boy to a responsible member of the Royal Family.
“Monarchy is an institution that can discipline people and shape them so that they can fulfill their duty. It’s a character-determining and shaping institution – just look at Prince Harry. Look at how he was seen a few years ago and how he is seen now,” he told host Ernie Rea.
Before taking on full-time royal duties, Prince Harry was able to “escape” from royal life by serving in the army.
Royal expert, Penny Junor claimed some feared Prince Harry would leave the family. “I think there was a real danger at one time that Harry might turn his back on his royal life, and his royal responsibilities and go and live somewhere quietly,” she said.
In 2017, the Duke of Sussex admitted his time in the army made him reconsider his future in the monarchy. “I felt I wanted out [of the Royal Family] but then decided to stay in and work out a role for myself,” Harry said at the time.
Thanks to his service in the army and his composure during Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding, Prince Harry was able to shake his “rebel prince” reputation.
“What I think is so important in our society, is not just to have simplistic demands, that do nothing for people, but the notion of duties. And monarchy is essentially a station of great duty,” Blond revealed.
Lately, Prince Harry and Meghan have been criticized for some of their decisions. However, the Duke of Sussex seems to be an example of the Royal Family’s ability to maintain a structured monarchy despite rebellious behavior.
