KEY POINTS

  • King Charles has kept communication channels with Prince Harry "open throughout the last few years," a report says
  • Harry was reportedly "wrong" to claim his family does not want to reconcile with him
  • The Sussexes are "welcome" to meet with the monarch "any time," according to the report

Prince Harry was "wrong" to claim that King Charles has shown "no willingness" to repair his relationship with him, a report has claimed.

The Duke of Sussex recently claimed that a reconciliation with the royal family did not seem likely to happen anytime soon, suggesting that his father King Charles and his older brother Prince William were to blame for their continuing rift.

Prince Harry made the claim in a trailer for an interview with ITV's Tom Bradby, which is part of the press tour for the upcoming release of the duke's highly anticipated memoir, "Spare."

But an anonymous palace source told The Telegraph that the 74-year-old monarch was eager to end their feud and has kept a line of communication with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

"Those close to the King insist that he has always made clear how much he loves both of his sons, keeping communication channels open throughout the last few years, despite the many barbs from California," the British newspaper reported, citing unnamed palace sources.

The insiders told the outlet that Prince Harry's claims were "wrong," adding that King Charles and his younger son, 38, have remained in contact and met up several times when the Sussexes were in the U.K. last year for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The monarch has "reiterated that his door remains open and that the duke and [Meghan] are welcome at any time," the report claimed. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

Vanity Fair royal correspondent and editor Katie Nicholl also previously said that King Charles wanted to reconcile with Prince Harry.

"I think Charles has been devastated by how things have spiraled," the royal author claimed during an interview with Fox News Digital in October, ahead of the release of her book "The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown." "And he is hopeful that there will be a reconciliation. I think we saw that in the very... public olive branches that were extended to Harry and Meghan. After the Queen's death, particularly in that first speech that Charles gave to the nation, he spoke of his love for Harry and Meghan."

In his inaugural speech as monarch in September, King Charles sent Prince Harry and Markle his "love" as they "continue to build their lives overseas."

Nicholl suggested that the King addressing the Sussexes by their first names in his speech and allowing Prince Harry to wear his military uniform to a vigil for Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September, were some signs that show Charles wants to mend fences with his son.

"He does want to sort his relationship with his son," Nicholl claimed of the King. "He wants to do it on a personal level because he loves his son. He's never stopped loving his son. He may not be happy about everything that's been said, but he wants to have a relationship with Harry and he wants to have a relationship with his grandchildren."

However, Prince Harry claimed in a new clip from his upcoming ITV interview that his family has "shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile," telling Bradby, "I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back."

"I want a family, not an institution," the royal claimed. "It never needed to be this way. The leaking and the planting ... They feel as though it's better to keep us, somehow, as the villains."

Prince Harry's interview with Bradby airs Sunday, along with the royal's interview with Anderson Cooper for "60 Minutes."

The sit-downs are part of the publicity blitz for Prince Harry's memoir, "Spare," which will be released Tuesday. The book is expected to explore his life both in and out of the royal family.
