Prince Philip Dies Aged 99: Quotes To Remember The Duke Of Edinburgh
Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband and the Duke of Edinburgh, died Friday morning at age 99.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," a statement from the palace read. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Prince Philip, who was born on the Greek island of Corfu on 10 June 1921, married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen.
In March, he left King Edward VII's hospital in central London after a month-long stay for treatment. He and the Queen had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Here are some of the quotes from Prince Philip, the longest-serving consort of any British monarch.
1. "If I were reincarnated I would wish to be returned to Earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels."
2. "A gun is no more dangerous than a cricket bat in the hands of a madman."
3. "Everything that wasn't invented by God is invented by an engineer."
4. "Everyone has to have a sense of duty. A duty to society, to their family. I mean, you name it."
5. "I reckon I've done my bit. I want to enjoy myself a bit now, with less responsibility, less frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say."
6. "I am the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his children."
7. "I have frequently been misrepresented. I don't hate the press; I find a lot of it is very unpalatable."
8. "There was no precedent. If I asked somebody, 'What do you expect me to do?' they all looked blank. They had no idea; nobody had much idea."
