Prince Philip is the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, but he is not considered the king of England.

According to Reader’s Digest, when Prince William becomes king in the near future, his wife, Kate Middleton will be known either as queen or queen consort. But why didn’t Prince Philip receive the title of king as the husband of the Queen?

The British Royal Family website revealed that this is all based on the British Parliamentary Law, which determines who is qualified to sit next to the throne. In terms of succession, the law looks only at blood and not at gender.

When a male in the royal bloodline marries, his wife automatically inherits the counterpart of his title. This is the reason why Middleton may be called queen or queen consort later on. But when it the woman in the royal bloodline that marries, her husband doesn’t automatically inherit the title.

Marlene Koenig, a royal historian, told Town & Country that this is why Princess Eugenie’s fiancé, Jack Brooksbank, won’t be called Prince Brooksbank after they tie the knot on Oct. 12.

Prince Philip didn’t become a prince after he married Queen Elizabeth II. At that time, she was still called Princess Elizabeth. Rather, he received the title of Prince Philip or Prince Consort after the Queen took over the throne from his father.

In related news, Prince Philip also made headlines recently after it his letters to Princess Diana were released. In the written texts, Prince Philip expressed his support towards the Princess of Wales and Prince Charles’ marriage and not towards his son’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

“Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position. We never dreamt he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads,” he wrote.

Prince Philip’s letter to the late princess was even signed with, “With the fondest love, Pa.”
