Prince Philip used to be optimistic before he welcomed his grandchildren.
According to Express, the Duke of Edinburgh was worried about his grandsons Prince William and Prince Harry and how they would live in a world where one couldn’t trust his neighbor or a worldplagued with “frightening” population explosion. Queen Elizabeth II revealed this when he shared to her his nightmares.
“I have nightmares about the world the next generation or the generation after that is going to live in,” he told Woman’s Own magazine in 1986.
“The rate at which the world’s population is growing is frightening. It’s inevitable that grave damage is going to be done to the world in the next 100 years.”
Prince Philip continued to say that the older he got, he felt that “things are going to get worse.” He recalled a period in the country when one could just leave his car unlocked and when one could trust anybody. However, during the interview, things had already changed.
“Now you can’t even trust your neighbour,” the duke said.
He also mentioned the nuclear weapons and how those things would not go off by themselves. The journalist who interviewed Prince Philip felt that he became a worrier after welcoming his grandchildren because Prince Philip was very different in their previous interviews.
“When I first interviewed him 15 years ago, he was optimistic about the future,” the journalist said. “Not today, however. Now, having grand-children on his own, he worries about the world his descendants are to enjoy.”
Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate Middleton were warned against repeating Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s mistake. Royal correspondent Richard Fitzwilliams was referring to the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s visit in Amritsar where the British troops reportedly gunned down 379 unarmed protesters.
The Queen was asked for an apology but declined. Prince Philip made the matter worse by commenting that he thought the number of those killed had been exaggerated.
Fitzwilliams praised the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for their Pakistan trip which was deemed the most complex royal tour to date. He added that the future king and queen had a “very good year” in 2019.
