Prince William and Prince Harry reportedly strengthened their relationship with Queen Elizabeth II following a tragic incident in their life.

When the Duke of Cambridge was just 15 years old and Prince Harry was 12, the young boys had to face the difficulties of living without a mother. Princess Diana passed away following a fatal car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.

Following the death of the Princess of Wales, the Queen received a very public backlash after royal fans claimed that she reacted coldly to the death of Prince Charles’ ex-wife. The Union Jack flag was also only lowered to half-mast outside the Buckingham Palace after several days from the time of Princess Diana’s death.

But despite the public’s outrage, Prince William and Prince Harry came to their grandmother’s defense in the BBC documentary that aired two years ago. During their interview. the royal siblings said that the Queen did what she had to do to be there for her two grandsons.

“At the time, you know, my grandmother wanted to protect her two grandsons and my father as well. Our grandmother deliberately removed the newspapers and things like that, so there was nothing in the house at all, so we didn’t know what was going on,” Prince William said.

And since cellular phones or the Internet were not widely used then, Prince William and Prince Harry couldn’t just get news and information anytime anywhere.

Prince William said that he’s thankful to his grandmother for doing what she did to make sure that he and his younger brother could mourn and collect their thoughts following their mom’s passing.

“We had no idea that the reaction to her death would be quite so huge. I think it was a very hard decision for my grandmother to make… She felt very torn between being a grandmother to William and Harry and her Queen role,” Prince William said.
