Prince William once skipped Fresher’s Week while studying at the University of St. Andrews due to a serious reason.

The Duke of Cambridge’s security and privacy were of vital importance while he was a student. As such, those studying at the same school were warned by the university principal to not leak any information about Prince William or they could face sanctions.

Prince William was also determined to be treated like any normal student at St. Andrews, but this became difficult because he also needed round-the-clock security. And because he feared the intense media interest surrounding him, he was forced to skip Fresher’s Week.

In a previous article released by The Guardian, it was revealed that the staff and students at the school were warned about potentially facing disciplinary action if they leaked stories about Prince William to the press.

During an interview with the student newspaper, The Saint, Principal, and Vice-Chancellor Brian Lang said that he was determined to protect Prince William’s privacy. Lang also said that depending on the extent of the information leaked, the suspects may be expelled from St. Andrews.

Marcus Booth, student union president at St. Andrews, said that some impoverished students found it hard to resist the temptation of earning easy cash in exchange for photographs and gossip about Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s eldest child.

“I want Prince William to live as normal a life as possible but of course we’re concerned about intrusive media. The prospect of his university life being dissected or his academic grades leaked, would be awful,” he said.

Prince William graduated from the university in 2005 with an honors degree in geography. The Duke of Cambridge met his wife, Kate Middleton, in the same school, and she also graduated in the same year. Middleton completed an honors degree course in Art History.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge first crossed paths in 2001 when they arrived in school as newcomers.
