Princess Charlotte could find herself in another unprecedented position if Jacob Rees-Mogg’s proposal had been approved.

Prince William and Middleton’s only daughter found herself in a precedented position after she became the first ever royal baby girl to take her place in the line of succession regardless of her gender. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 abolished male preferences, which could have made Prince Louis the fourth-in-line to the throne, ahead of his big sister.

Princess Charlotte could have found herself in another unprecedented position if Rees-Mogg’s proposal in the Act had been approved, Express reported. The 1701 Acts of Settlement disqualified anyone who is a Roman Catholic or who married one from the line of succession.

The reigning monarch or heir must be a member of the Church of England. The 2013 Act modernized this aspect by allowing the monarch to marry someone of the Catholic faith. However, there is no provision allowing a monarch to be Catholic.

Rees-Mogg, who is Catholic himself, proposed a clause to the bill to remedy the discrimination against Catholic monarchs and to safeguard the Church of England. He suggested that if the monarch is Catholic, the next in line of succession should perform the functions of the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

This means that if Prince George converts to Catholicism, he will still retain his right to become king. However, Princess Charlotte will be the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This would lead to the unprecedented situation where the Head of State and the Supreme Governor of the Church of England would be two different people.

Just recently, Prince William and Middleton took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to watch Aston Villa’s match against Norwich City on Saturday. During their outing, Prince George was seen cheering for their favorite team. He was seen jumping and clapping and smiling as Aston Villa paved their way to their victory.

Prince William is a huge fan of Aston Villa. He was even spotted joining the crowd at Wembley Stadium a week after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding to witness his favorite team’s game against Fulham in the Premier League final, but the royal’s bet lost the match.
