Princess Diana once broke down in tears after having a conversation with Queen Elizabeth II.

In the documentary “The Royal House of Windsor,” the Princess of Wales’ former protection officer, Ken Wharfe, recounted a time when his boss challenged the established royal order. And as such, Her Majesty was forced to step in.

After having a conversation with the monarch, Wharfe saw Princess Diana leaving the room in tears. When he asked her what happened, the Princess of Wales said that he wouldn’t believe it.

“And she said: ‘The Queen has said, ‘why don’t you get involved with something nicer? Something more pleasant?’” Wharfe said.

Princess Diana was referring to her dedication to help remove the stigma attached to HIV and AIDs patients. Years ago, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom was photographed shaking the hands of a man inflicted with the disease without wearing gloves.

Patrick Jephson, Princess Diana’s former private secretary, said that a lot of people also urged the late royal to pursue more traditional charities.

“People thought she would be happier if she did easy more traditional royal charities, animal charities for example. And she said to me one day, ‘Patrick, we’ll do animal charities when we run out of people charities,’” he said.

Meanwhile, there’s another touching reason why Princess Diana is rarely seen wearing gloves on while out in public. Eleri Lynn, the curator of “Diana: Her Fashion Story,” told People that the Princess of Wales broke the royal protocol of wearing gloves because she liked to hold hands when visiting people.

The late royal also loved shaking hands with and have direct contact with her royal fans. And unlike the Queen, Princess Diana was also rarely seen in public with a huge hat. She said that wearing one would make it impossible for her to cuddle with a child.

During her visit to hospitals, Princess Diana wore “careful clothes” that would convey warmth. She also loved wearing chunky jewelry so that the kids could play with them.
