Would Princess Diana Have Been Named Queen Mother If She Were Alive?
Princess Diana has been dead for over two decades, but royal fans recently discussed if she would have been named Queen Mother if she were still alive.
The title of Queen Mother was given to Queen Elizabeth II’s late mom, Queen Elizabeth I. At first glance, the title of Queen Mother may be understood based on its literal translation as the mother of the Queen. However, there’s more to it than just that.
Queen Mother is a title that belongs to the monarch’s mother, which means that if the monarch is a man, his mom will still be known as Queen Mother. However, the rules surrounding the title are slightly unclear because Queen Mother also means a widowed Queen Consort.
Meanwhile, after Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced, the mom of two was stripped off her royal status but not her royal title. This means that if the Princess of Wales was still alive today, she may still be known as the Princess of Wales. But if she remarries, she will only be known as Lady Diana.
With or without her royal title, Princess Diana may qualify to be called Queen Mother for the very reason that he is the mom of a future King. When Prince Charles sits on the throne, the Princess of Wales will be referred to as Queen Mother, that is if she was still alive by then.
Additionally, when Prince William becomes King, he will also have the power to give anyone a royal title. It is possible that he will bend the rules for Princess Diana and give her an entirely new royal title that wouldn’t have any links to Prince Charles.
In related news, Camilla Parker Bowles may also be referred to as Queen Mother one day if she outlives Prince Charles. The Duchess of Cornwall also happens to be Prince William’s legal mother, so she may be afforded the prestigious title in the coming years.
