Princess Diana reportedly broke royal tradition during her trip to Australia years ago.

Just two years after marrying Prince Charles, Princess Diana went on a tour of Australia and she decided to bring Prince William along with her. The Princess of Wales’ decision to bring an infant went completely against royal tradition, but royal fans were more than delighted to catch a glimpse of the adorable prince in public.

During the trip, the doting mom even insisted on making the entire tour all about her eldest son. She oftentimes went out with Prince William especially during her days off.

Juliet Reiden, Woman’s Weekly’s editor-at-large and author of “The Royals in Australia,” told 9Honey’s “The Windsors” podcast that Queen Elizabeth opted to not bring any of her children when she toured Australia. So, what Princess Diana did was a first among the royals.

“Prince Charles was left without his mother for months on end. Di was not going to have that for her son,” Reiden said. Princess Diana had changed royal protocol definitely,” she added.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana’s tour of Australia was not the only time that she broke royal tradition and protocol. Prior to marrying Prince Charles, Princess Diana broke royal tradition when she chose her own engagement ring from a catalog. Typically, royal engagement rings are custom-made, but the Princess of Wales picked her from Garrard’s booklet.

Princess Diana was also the first member of the royal family to write her own vows. Unlike the generations before her, she opted to remove the word obey from her vows. Three decades later, Prince William and Kate Middleton followed in her footsteps.

The doting mom was also very hands-on when it came to raising her two sons. She was the one who chose Prince William and Prince Harry’s names, and she also breastfed them as infants. Royal expert Christopher Warwick said that the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex were both lucky to have Princess Diana as their mom.

“William and Harry were very, very fortunate with Diana as a mother because her ideas were so different from the previous generation,” he told Reader's Digest.
