Princess Diana’s Former Bodyguard Questions Why Prince Philip Was Alone During Accident
Princess Diana’s former protection officer, Ken Wharfe, recently questioned why Prince Philip was alone at the time of his car accident.
Roy Warne, 75, the man who pulled the Duke of Edinburgh out of his vehicle after it crashed with a Kia, revealed that the retired royal was followed by his security team in a car behind, but they weren’t inside the Land Rover with him.
Wharfe, who served in the Met for 35 years, said that all royals – retired or otherwise – needs to be accompanied by protection officers at all times. However, this has been very difficult to do with Prince Philip because he has a reputation for giving his officers a hard time.
Princess Diana’s former bodyguard said that he is convinced that if someone was with Prince Philip in the car at that time, the accident wouldn’t have happened.
“The Queen may drive alone on the estate from time to time but she would never leave the gates without an officer with her in the car and back up behind. She was absolutely livid – firstly through concern for her husband and second that there have been two people injured with a baby on board and it could have been much worse,” Wharfe told Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, Wharfe, who was referred to as Uncle Ken by Prince William and Prince Harry, said that he thinks Prince Philip was on his way to visit a friend off the Sandringham estate.
In the past, Wharfe also said that senior royals used to have their own personal protection units, but this has changed due to a rota system where officers are allocated to different members of the British clan.
“In the past, you would have officers with decades of experience who would know how to deal with the Duke and convince him they should be with him when he drives. That’s all gone,” he said.
Prince Philip underwent a series of tests in the hospital following the accident. He was also asked to undergo a breath test and passed.
