A royal expert believes Princess Diana would have never divorced Prince Charles had Queen Elizabeth II not put her foot down.

The Prince and Princess of Wales tied the knot in a fairytale wedding in 1981. However, their marriage broke down, and they separated in 1992 and finalized their divorce in August 1996.

But according to royal expert Emma Cooper, the global president of non-scripted television at Pulse Films, Princess Diana never wanted to give up on her marriage to Prince Charles despite their relationship troubles.

"I think that even after the separation in 1992, they still carried on doing engagements. I don’t think Diana ever really wanted to truly give up," she told Us Weekly Tuesday. "Actually, it was the Queen in the end [that] said, 'You're separated. You need to get divorced.' And I think she never, ever — did she really want to do that? Look, I don’t know. It feels to me from the evidence of all the testimony that we had in her own words, that it was hard for her."

Cooper explored the late princess' life in the spotlight while working as an executive producer on the six-part CNN original docuseries "Diana." While researching her, the royal expert said she learned some fascinating details about Princess Diana's relationship with Prince Charles.

Cooper recalled that on the day the late royal's divorce papers came through, Princess Diana told royal correspondent Jennie Bond in Kensington Palace that the only thing she wanted to do was to call and speak to Prince Charles.

However, Prince William and Prince Harry's mother forced herself not to do so because she thought that her ex-husband would think she "was silly again," according to Cooper.

"And I thought, 'That’s somebody who is not walking out of a marriage without feeling emotion,'" Cooper explained. "And actually, on that day, [Diana] was also wearing her wedding ring. She was photographed with her wedding ring on. So, I don't think she ran out of that marriage."

Prince Charles' rekindled relationship with ex Camilla Parker-Bowles — whom he went on to wed in April 2005 — during his marriage to Princess Diana had major consequences.

Cooper told the outlet that the late royal had been "aware" of the affair but was constantly being told by people around her that she was "crazy," "hysterical" and "obsessed."

However, the documentarian noted that regardless of their relationship troubles, Princess Diana and Prince Charles found a way to co-parent their two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, "very well."

Royal expert Elizabeth Holmes, author of "HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style," also spoke with Us Weekly ahead of the CNN docuseries' release to weigh in on Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage.

For her, their union was "almost like a business transaction" and was not romantic. She also claimed that there were a lot of "red flags" in their marriage, with Princess Diana making a huge life decision at 19 years old without a stable family behind her and much guidance.

"Diana" airs on CNN Sundays at 9 p.m. EST.
