Princess Diana ‘Intentionally Humiliated’ Prince Charles Following A Major Mistake For This Reason
During the final years of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, the couple struggled to hide the cracks in their relationship. During a particular trip, the Princess of Wales “intentionally humiliated” her husband in front of the press.
Charles and Diana visited India in 1992, the couple’s behavior during the trip tipped the public off to the issues in their marriage. Onlookers first began to suspect a stain in the pair’s marriage during a polo match.
In the documentary “Royalty Close Up: The Photography of Kent Gavin,” the photographer reflected on how Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent Valentine’s Day in 1992. At the time, Charles was participating in a polo match, while Diana watched from the sideline.
Gavin revealed he spoke to royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter and asked if Charles would kiss Diana during the event. “We’re not going to get anything like that,” Arbiter replied.
Despite the royal employee’s denial, Diana learned details about the conversation. “Anyway, the message got to Diana and had got to Charles. Charles tried to kiss her, and she turned her back on him, and he’s kissing the back of her neck. That set it all off in London again,” Gavin recalled.
Meanwhile, Arbiter had a different recollection of the incident and shared his perspective in his book, “On Duty With The Queen: My Time as a Buckingham Palace Press Officer.” Arbiter claimed Princess Diana was already upset with Charles and had no interest in handing out prizes following the event.
However, Diana became furious when Prince Charles forgot to kiss her in front of the press. Although the royal tried to rectify the mishap, the damage was already done. “Realizing his mistake, he hastily returned and, with an uncertain crowd looking on, moved to kiss his wife’s cheek,” Arbiter wrote.
“Incensed, the Princess swiveled her head so that the kiss landed near her ear. The crowd, as well as those accompanying the royal couple, could only cringe. The prince had clearly been intentionally humiliated, and we knew he’d be furious.”
Nonetheless, the trip continued its downward spiral when Diana was photographed sitting “alone and looking miserable” in front of the Taj Mahal.
The photo circulated on the cover of tabloids internationally and put a spotlight on the couple’s crumbling marriage. Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalized their divorce in 1996.
