Prince Diana had always loved Prince Charles, according to sources close to the ex-couple.

Petronella Wyatt recalled a dinner where she spoke with Princess Diana and Kerry Packer. According to her, the dinner was held at the Ritz after Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ separation.

“I sat next to Diana, with Kerry Packer, the Australian tycoon, on the other side. She was very jolly and unfussed by etiquette,” she said.

“I think we shared Packer's lap as a joke. She talked about her boys and her new-found friendship with Prince Charles. That made her very happy.”

During their jolly conversation, Princess Diana was asked what she would do if she could live her life again and she laughingly said that she wanted to “redo my marriage.” This convinced them that she had always loved Prince Charles.

“But I always thought, and so did friends of both her and Charles, that she remained a little in love with him. I never thought she was in love with Dodi Fayed,” she added.

Princess Diana revealed in an interview that after their split that she still joined Prince Charles in his royal engagements. They still appeared in public as if they were a married couple which was difficult for everyone.

They rode in the same car and shook the same hands. Prince Charles gave the speeches while she did the handshaking. Although it was difficult, she admitted that she was fine with it until the Prince of Wales decided to end their teamwork for good.

“Then my husband decided that we do separate engagements, which was a bit sad for me, because I quite liked the company,” Princess Diana said. “But, there again, I didn’t have the choice.”

Princess Diana and Prince Charles did not divorce until after four years partly because she was reluctant to end their marriage. According to Princess Diana’s friend and trainer Jenni Rivett, the People’s Princess didn’t want to divorce Prince Charles in the first place. She didn’t want to end her marriage with the future king because she wanted to be the Princess of Wales and the Queen of people’s hearts. Also, she wanted to be a good mother and a good wife.
