Princess Diana Trapped Like ‘Fly In Amber’ In Royal Family, Says Author
Princess Diana was reportedly trapped like a “fly in amber” in the royal family just like King Edward VIII.
Ted Powell, the author of “King Edward VIII: An American Life,” said that Princess Diana’s unhappy and ultimately tragic life as a member of the British clan had similarities to King Edward VIII’s career 60 years earlier.
“He was the first member of the Windsors to experience the full impact of the modern media, and his dysfunctional relationship with the press set the pattern for the Royal Family for the rest of the twentieth century,” he said (via Express).
The author also noted how Princess Diana became loved by the public since she wed Prince Charles. Two decades later, her popularity remained to the roof. King Edward VIII was also welcomed by cheering crowds while he was still the head of the monarchy. He once complained about his wrist hurting from waving and shaking the hands of the public for long periods of time.
“Like Edward, an in contrast with most other members of the House of Windsor, Diana possessed exceptional personal charisma. And just as Edward had done, she discovered that in the face of a rapacious media industry, royalty and charisma made a toxic, even fatal mixture,” he wrote.
More specifically, the similarities between Princess Diana and King Edward VIII may be drawn well over their fame. Both royals tried to escape Windsor, as well as the public’s attention.
“Like Edward, Diana tried to break out of her royal status, only to find herself ostracized by the Royal Family and yet trapped it, caught like a fly in amber,” he said.
In 1995, Princess Diana gave a controversial interview to Panorama about her struggles as part of the royal family. This angered Queen Elizabeth II, and it let to the finalization of the Princess of Wales’ divorce from Prince Charles.
King Edward VIII also left the Windsors when he decided to wed Wallis Simpson instead of keeping his crown.
